Lift-jitsu

I am a grappler and have been doing the Bridge. The use of RPEs seems to auto-regulate my fatigue, which I’m assuming is part of the point. Accordingly, I’m making gains even if not likely as fast as I otherwise could. (In actuality, I plug my rolling in fo GPP and will either do chins or not based on the level of fatigue I produce sparring.) The question, then, is fairly simple: if I’ve rightly read this auto-regulation of fatigue into RPEs, is it possible to continue with grappling and the strength template, or am I better off with, say, the HLM, which is the traditional answer to such a question? I’m happy to provide more information, which is likely necessary (I’m 38, seem to recover fairly well even if I’ve lost a step, I put on muscle mass very easy, I’m overweight, and my kids are exhausting.)

yes, you use RPE to select the weight on the bar. This means that sometimes the weight will be less and sometimes more, but that you’ll consistently get the correct stress.

Many people can not maximally improve their strength and their performance in another sport at the same time. To paraphrase Ron Swanson, it’s akin to trying to ride two horses with a half ass each.

if you are rolling for GPP, then the strength template is fine; if you are rolling as your primary sport, the strength template is probably still alright, but you’d be taking resources that might be better or otherwise spent on rolling.

It’s less of a recovery issue per se than a priority issue.

I respond well to training and have been able to make excellent gains in strength while training both, albeit, as I said, I’m sure they could be more if strength sports were my primary sport. What you’re illuminating however, is that the Strength Training template–as implied in the very title–is for strength training as a sport, which makes absolute sense. The answer then seems to be as follows: I’ll use an HLM/hypertrophy flip-flop while training primarily jiujitsu, which I do 6-9months of the year. When I move to 3-6 months of strength training, I’ll flip-flop strength with hypertrophy. Swanson should be satisfied.
