Scapholunate ligament tear and recommended surgery

Hello BBM,

I was recently diagnosed via MRI with a full thickness tear to the central fibers of my right scapholunate ligament after experiencing intermittent pain for ~6 months. There was no incidence of acute trauma that I can point to. The orthopedic physician I consulted with recommended an arthroscopic assessment and possible debridement and pinning.

Of course, MRI findings are notoriously unreliable, and after a review of the available literature on debridement and pinning for SLL injury the procedure seems to have an overall low efficacy.
I have found that I can manage symptoms and train normally as things are, but I am worried about the development of SLAC wrist; Should I go forward with the orthopedist’s recommendations?
In other words, my current condition seems to be best managed conservatively as it is, but am I risking the development of disability by not acting?

Thank you.
