top down or bottom up planning?

do you coaches think there is any value in programming from a bottom up approach, such as in RTS Emerging Strategies, where a micro cycle is essentially repeated until the effect wears off, to which then a washout/delaod week takes place followed by a slight adjustment in the next microcyle rotation?

what are some benefits of this type of trianing compared to a top down (Ie your templates) approach? inversely, what are the benefits of having a longer term plan written out to follow ?
