Wrist surgical procedure

Hello! I have arthritis in my right wrist that’s causing severe pain. I am thinking of getting a partial row carpectomy or a wrist fusion. The doctor has gone over both procedures but I wanted to get some feedback on this forum about what would be best in general. Especially if one wanted to continue training at a decently high level. I am 47 and compete in powerlifting and strongman.

Thanks for any feedback!

I haven’t worked with anyone competitive who has had either of these procedures, though I have had 1 client with the carpectomy. That being said, I wouldn’t expect any predictable decrease in performance from the procedure that IS NOTrelated to the down time from training secondary to the procedure.

I’m not sure if there is a reliable decrease in grip strength after either procedure that’s been seen in the literature either and a brief search yields mixed results. None of those studies were done in trained lifters either and from my impression, you’re likely to be BETTER off having a procedure that lets you train more often, with more volume, and less arthritic pain.

Grip strength was my primary concern so thank you for the response. I really appreciate it.
