Can I train with a damaged Ulna bone?

Hi BBM,

As for context, yesterday I slipped and fell on my left hand while my wrist was extended. It hurt intially but wasn’t too bad, and this morning my hand started hurting more than yesterday. Additionly, my hand is slightly swolen around the Ulna bone (the long bone between the elbow and the wrist). When I’m resting it only slightly hurts, but when I move my wrist up/down it hurts abit more, and when I try to move my wrist sideways it’s very painful.

My questions are:

  1. Should I get an X-Ray to see my arm is broken or if it’s a serious injury? The reason i’m asking is because it’s not painful and swolen to the point I would have thought it’s broken, though I have already broken the same bone around 6 years ago so it worth checking it out just in case?

  2. If it’s unlikely that it’s broken, how long do I need to take off training?

Hey Ben - sorry to hear about the fall. It’s not possible for us to provide accurate information or recommendations without a consultation. Given the context of a trauma, I recommend following up with someone locally to assess the area and decide on next steps.

Hi Michael,

I wanted to give an update on the situation and ask for help as to what I should do.

A few days after the injury i’ve done an X-RAY which hasn’t shown any injuries in the results (This was around the end of July), and the doctor at the hospital told me I could go back to training regularly within a few days. I have been training regularly ever since (Except for a month break that I took right after the injury), while also doing physiotherapy for a different injury, where I was also getting treatment for my left hand. The problem I’m having is that the pain has remained at a pretty consistant level ever since the injury (It’s not as bad as the first few days though it hasn’t improved much either).

Today I went to a specialist wrist orthopedist as the pain wasn’t improving even though it has been a fair few months since the injury. The orthopedist told me that I need to get an MRI scan as soon as possible, as he fears that I could have a Scaphoid fracture which he said would require immediate surgery, though he said that it’s unlikely that this is the case and it’s more likely than I have a tear in my wrist ligaments. He also said that I should stop doing any exercise which puts pressure on my hand which leads me to my questions.

My question is, can I train until I get the results of the MRI back, and if so which exercises can I safely do?

For example, I assume the any pushing exercises are out of the question for now, though can I do any pulling exercises such as deadlifts (Maybe with straps?), or pull-ups?

Additionly, are there any bicep / tricep exercises I could do at the moment?

Any help would be much appreciated!
