Clean pulls/deadlifts vs regular DLs

Hi Jordan
Thanks for all the great content you guys put out for free!

Wondering what’s your take on doing clean pulls or clean-style deadlifts for building pulling strength instead of doing regular deadlifts if your bias is towards oly-lifts?

Do do you think that regular deadlifts should be included in oly-programming?
My major concern in doing regular DLs is messing up the bar-path in first pull. Any thoughts?

Herc,

I think clean pulls have their place in Olympic lifting focused programming. I think most deadlifts should be performed similar to cleans for more trained lifters, e.g. in WL shoes, hook gripped, conventional, etc.

For untrained lifters or CrossFitters, I would not necessitate these concessions.

It is highly unlikely that doing a “regular” deadlift is messing up the bar path in the first pull or even that the bar path in the first pull is the limiting factor in your Olympic lifts.

Thanks for your reply. In other words you would recommend keeping regular deadlifts in the program for average gym goers/crossfitters until they are advanced Weightlifters?

I just don’t think it matters enough to have a firm preference unless there is specific context, e.g. competitive weightlifter.
