Hi there, I cut my finger on a shattering glass, requiring 5 stitches. Dr. advised to not lift heavy things for 2 weeks (to avoid reopening the scar), but I’m not sure what her standards for “heavy” are (I’m abroad, and couldn’t explain/ask). Is 2 weeks enough, or should I wait longer for DLs?
The wound is U-shaped, opposite the fingernail, on the underside of the finger.
Unfortunately it’s really hard to give specific advice on this kind of thing here, sorry.
If I were in that situation I’d probably try to gently feel it out on the lightest warm-up sets, and if things are going OK use straps for moderate or heavier loads, paying attention to how things feel before returning to normal. Similarly vague advice, but there is no way to give a very specific healing and loading timeframe for someone via a forum like this.
Makes sense, I’m currently using thick bandages to protect the cut and make it unlikely to accidentally overload too soon and will RPE my way through this.
Hello! I had a similar episode recently and found that the engorgement of blood to my hand during heavy deadlifts did cause some bleeding. I’d recommend putting a pressure dressing over the wound like tight as hell just during the heaviest parts of your training and as mentioned using straps. The pressure dressing allowed me to train with normal loads with the addition of straps for everything over 135. I also tried to extend the affected finger when I could and not take a full grip with just that finger which seemed to help with pressure/ bleeding. Hopefully this is helpful.
